NON-ELECTRIC AIR CON AND 16 RAILS LATER--- Premier Wen Jiabao's Visit to BROAD Town
4/21/2009 9:49:00 AM
YOU MUST BE ZHANG YUE
August 13, 2005, 10:00 AM, BROAD Town, China. A convoy of official vehicles slowly approached the Office Building of BROAD Air Conditioning and came to a stop. Emerging from one of the vehicles, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was warmly greeted by Mr. Zhang Yue, BROAD Chairman and CEO. "You must be Zhang Yue. I know you! "Premier Wen exclaimed in his greeting. "Yes, I am. Premier, welcome to BROAD Town!" replied CEO Zhang as the two shook hands. BROAD CEO Zhang then personally introduced his top-level managers to the Premier.
Premier Wen was accompanied by more than ten of China's key leaders. Among them were Mr. Ma Kai, Director of National Development and Reform Commission, Mr. Jin Renqing, Minister of Finance, and Mr. Li Rongrong, Director of State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council.

HI-TECH PRODUCTS HAVE PENETRATED EUROPEAN AND US MARKETS, WHICH ARE BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE CHINESE ECONOMY
Pointing to many BROAD logos on the globe, Mr. Ma Gan, VP Sales briefed Premier Wen on the extent of BROADs reach in the global market place. Mr. Ma spun the globe and when the USA came into sight, he began telling Premier Wen that BROAD USA had been headquartered in the World Trade Center in New York and they moved out just three months prior to September 11. Premier Wen was very moved by the discussion of this event.
Continuing his presentation, Mr. Ma explained BROADs success. Premier Wen was very pleased to learn that BROAD non-electric air con systems have been sold in 40 countries and have achieved the leading market share of this type of system in the USA.
Premier Wen stressed, hi-tech products have penetrated European and US markets, which are bright prospects for the future of the Chinese economy.
ATTITUDE IS THE KEY TO THE QUALITY
Premier Wen looked around in the lobby and noticed a quote on the wall." Is that your business philosophy?" he asked Zhang Yue. Premier Wen was referring to BROAD's vision, crafted by Zhang Yue, which reads "Our aim is to provide the best products and services in the world. We strive to not only be a market leader and increase sales, but also to treat our customers as friends and live up to their expectations. Shortcomings resulting from negligence not only affect our reputation and bottom line, but they also impair our friendships."
Mr. Zhang Yue told Premier Wen," When I was in Germany on business several years ago, I learned that something was wrong with a chiller there. Immediately, I sent a fax to our Factory Manager and these lines came from this important fax." Premier Wen nodded his head showing his understanding of this important vision, and remarked, Attitude is the key to the quality!"
SIMPLICITY AND GOOD ORDER ARE MODERN PRODUCTION
When Premier Wen and his entourage reached the viewing area overlooking the General Assembly Workshop, the advanced manufacturing process was described in the following manner. There are six assembly lines and nineteen steps for each line. Each worker works at a fixed manufacturing cell performing certain skilled functions. The efficiency of this cellular approach improves productivity several-fold when compared to only one fixed station for all general assembly work that was employed ten years ago. The workers and quality control personnel are very familiar with their work further leading to improved product quality. The Premier waved his hand and said," Simplicity and good order are modern production."
CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE PRINCIPLE OF NON-ELECTRIC AIR CON?
Premier Wen then asked, "Zhang Yue, can you explain the principle of non-electric air con?" Mr. Zhang Yue said, "The common name of non-electric air con is lithium bromide (LiBr) air conditioning. Lithium bromide is a kind of salt with strong affinity to water. When heated, it produces water vapor. The vapor is condensed into water, which is sprayed on the copper tubes for cooling. This is how cooling is made. Water takes away the heat of the air conditioning system and becomes vapor again, which is absorbed by LiBr solution, and the diluted LiBr solution is heated and water vapor is regenerated to repeat this cooling cycle."

THE SUN SHINES SO BRIGHT WHY NOT WALK IN THE WORKSHOP?
Premier Wen and his entourage came out of the Office Building and, as they passed by the gate of the General Assembly Workshop, he asked," Is production going on here?" " This is the workshop we just saw from the viewing area", Mr. Zhang answered. Premier Wen turned around and walked directly into the workshop, saying, The sun shines so bright - why not walk in the workshop? In front of an almost finished chiller, Premier Wen asked, Where is the compressor? Mr. Zhang Yue answered," Unlike electric air conditioners, no compressors are required. Our non-electric air conditioners consist of six heat exchangers. "Soon after that, Mr. Zhang Yue, the key inventor of China's first direct-fired non-electric air conditioner, lamented that he mentioned six heat exchangers instead of seven, a most unlikely mistake for someone devoted to the development of non-electric air conditioners for over 15 years.
DOES THE COOLING COME FROM HERE FOR THIS NON-ELECTRIC AIR CON?
Stepping by equipment and parts, Premier Wen went close to the chiller, carefully looking at the details, and even putting his hand in the copper tubes of the evaporator," Does the cooling come from here for this non-electric air con?" "Yes, you are right!" Mr. Zhang answered. He invited the Premier to see the inner luster of copper tubes. Premier Wen stepped close to the copper tubes and viewed kaleidoscopic rays from the other end for some time.

WASTE RECYCLING SHOULD BE HIGHLY ADVOCATED
Arriving at the materials receiving part of the factory campus, Mr. Zhang Yue pointed to the crates of copper tubes and began to open one of the crates. These crates are about seven meters long and quite heavy for one person to open. Several people, including the Premier, gave him a hand. After opening the crate, Mr. Zhang began to tear open the water-proof films and protective papers. Premier Wen again assisted. "We recycle these materials for packing other accessories, "Mr. Zhang Yue explained." Will they be degraded and remolded?" Premier Wen asked." No, we use it directly for packaging," Mr. Zhang Yue replied. "We never throw away anything we can reuse. These crates we recycle for decorating our hotels and many pieces of furniture in our apartments are made of those crates. They are beautiful, "Zhang continued. Premier Wen was very happy saying," Waste recycling should be highly advocated."
NON-ELECTRIC AIR CON CAN BE DRIVEN BY WASTE HEAT
Standing by a cooling, heating and power (CHP) system, Mr. Zhang Yue said," This equipment recycles the waste heat from this generator to provide cooling. The generator is over 300 kW, and the cooling obtained is more than 500 kW. If we had not implemented this non-electric air conditioner, the heat would have been wasted." Premier Wen was very happy, "Oh, I see the cooling is recovered, non-electric air conditioners can recycle the waste heat and save energy, which is fabulous."
Mr. Ma Gan highlighted," This kind of CHP system has very good sales in Europe and the US. The largest chiller we have ever sold in the world is for a CHP system. This CHP plant is one of seven high efficiency projects awarded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in 2001 following President George W. Bush's National Energy Policy. Remarkably, BROAD chillers are featured on three of these seven projects sponsored by DOE, which have rocked the States."

CAN YOU REPEAT THE PRINCIPLE? HOW TO GENERATE C00LING?
Mr. Zhang Yue was introducing another portion of the factory when Premier Wen asked, "Can you repeat the principle? The lithium bromide principle? How to generate cooling? "Mr. Zhang Yue regrettably realized that his previous explanation of the principle may have been too brief for the Premier. He began again by verbally and with gestures to explain," If I spread a drop of alcohol on your hand, you will feel very cool. "The Premier nodded in understanding and said, "Yes! Yes! For it evaporates and takes away the heat. "The Premier is a specialist indeed. Mr. Zhang continued, "We create a high vacuum environment to allow water to evaporate at a low temperature. Water is sprayed on copper tubes; it absorbs the heat and evaporates. This is the cooling process. But where does the water vapor go after evaporation? It is absorbed by LiBr solution, which will be heated to separate the water (vapor) from the LiBr so it can be condensed by the atmosphere into water to repeat the cooling cycle again."

BROAD NON-ELECTRIC AIR CON IS THE RECYCLING ECONOMY
Being rushed by his entourage, Premier Wen went inside the BROAD Monitoring Center where he first viewed BROAD's story "The Miracle of Fire". Then the Monitoring Center personnel displayed real-time operating status of several BROAD installations. Viewing the first Universal Cultural Forum, which recycles power plant waste heat for cooling, Premier Wen showed great interest and said," BROAD non-electric air con is the recycling economy. We must advocate it and construct a conservation-minded society by means of science and technology."
ONLY NON-ELECTRIC AIR CON HAS A FUTURE IN CHINA AND IN THE WORLD AS WELL
Premier Wen said solemnly, "The development of BROAD is in agreement with China's national policy of constructing a conservation-minded society. BROAD has developed on some scale in such a short time, which comes from the joint efforts of its management team and all the employees, and its faith of being pioneers and market leaders. The responsibility of the government is to create a fair-and-square competitive environment for all enterprises with different forms of ownerships, and to explore everyone's intelligence. We shall support whatever is beneficial to the country and the people. Therefore, the future of a company is fundamentally based on talents, on people's minds and intelligence. Therefore, our most significant policy is to motivate people! Greatly energize people to be creative and hard-working. "Eying Mr. Zhang Yue narrowly, Premier Wen paused for dozens of seconds and then said, "This is a basic experience that we have learned from BROAD."
After a while, Premier Wen's tone turned soft," Zhang Yue, I am pleased to have visited your company today, and hope you would continue to work hard. The world is so big, I am sure that only Non-electric Air Con has a future in China and in the world as well!"

WERE YOU INJURED BEFORE?
Mr. Zhang Yue guided Premier Wen to see an air conditioning unit in post-treatment process. Premier Wen touched the shiny surface and said, "You make such large equipment so fine, I can tell that you pay great attention to the quality. "And he asked," What is this workshop?" Mr. Zhang Yue replied, "This is the post-treatment and Product Testing Workshop." Premier Wen took Mr. Zhang Yues hand and
walked farther in the workshop," Lets have a look."
Zhang Yue was so worried that the rails in the workshop floor might trip the Premier that he stooped and reminded the Premier with his hand before each rail, "Attention please! Premier. Take care! "Before reaching the end of the workshop, the Premier walked across 16 rails with the same vigorous steps!
Noticing Mr. Zhang Yue's pose of stooping to guide the way, Premier Wen thought something was wrong with him, "Were you injured before? "Zhang replied, "No, I have not even taken one pill for 17 years, I am in great shape!" Premier Wen smiled, "That's terrific."

HOW BIG IS A 300 THOUSAND SQUARE METER BUILDING?
At the end of the workshop, there was a unit under testing. Mr. Zhang Yue pointed at the unit and said, "This is the world's largest air conditioning equipment with a cooling capacity of 11.63 MW. It can provide air conditioning for a 200 thousand square meter building. If it were in Europe, the equipment could serve a 300 thousand square meter building. For European designers often design less air conditioning load for each square meter. "Premier Wen thought and then asked, "How big is a 300 thousand square meter building? "Mr. Zhang Yue answered, "There is not one building that big in China yet." Premier Wen nodded," Oh, not yet in China." Premier Wen asked many other questions with great curiosity during his visit.

BROAD IS NO ORDINARY COMPANY
Premier Wen saw five large-sized posters by the roadside, Mr. Zhang Yue said," Premier, these are especially for you. The subjects of those posters are as follows: what BROAD has done for China, for the world, for the Earth, for science and technology, and for customers." Premier Wen thought aloud, "Non-electric air con contributes to the conservation-minded society.BROAD Air Conditioning has provided green services for over forty countries, saved four million tons of standard oil, and developed the recycling economy." After reading the posters, Premier Wen exclaimed, "Zhang Yue, BROAD is no ordinary company. You have made special contributions to the country."

I WILL BE BACK
Finally the sad moment came to say goodbye. Mr. Zhang Yue could not contain his excitement and grasped both of the Premier's hands firmly, "Do come back, Premier! " "Do your best, Zhang Yue, I will be back, I will!" he replied. Premier Wen returned to his vehicle, followed by Ma Kai, Jin Renqing, Li Rongrong and other policy-makers of the Chinese economy.
China's top leaders have left BROAD Town, what impressions do they have? How will China's environmental policies change as a result of this visit?...
